COMING UP: Strong Asian Mothers + Albert Gold + Lauran Hibberd @ THOUSAND ISLAND (CloseUp x tmrw Volume 2)

On the 28th June, we’ll be joining forces with tmrw magazine for volume 2 of our quarterly showcases. Join us at Thousand Island in Highbury & Islington as we combine a unique live experience with hotly tipped talent.

Having started off dabbling in the indie rock genre, our headliners, Strong Asian Mothers, decided they wanted something a bit more upbeat that could be enjoyed at parties. They carefully collaborated hip-hop, trap beats, energetic pop and synths to create an incredible sound that has generated much-deserved interest from the music world.

The trio have been friends since childhood, and growing up in 1980s England, know all too well about cultural challenges. As the name suggests, Strong Asian Mothers’ is a reflection of their upbringing, ethics, heritage and the consistency to push boundaries and challenge expectations.

In 2016, they self-released the EP ‘Lynx Africa’, a slick 4 track record featuring the singles ‘The More That I’ and ‘Out of Love’ – an anthemic track, with a building beat, explosive sound, and an infectious chorus. ‘Hard to Find’ is the band’s more recent offering and is a head bopping, toe-tapping evocative track with pulsating beats that will sound even better up on stage.

Support for the night comes from the superb Albert Gold who fits the line up perfectly with his versatile mix of R’n’B, soul, funk and pop that’s fresh and slick. Check out tracks ‘Endless’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Go’ that channel his influences of Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder to create an astounding and enjoyable soulful sound.

Alongside them will be Lauran Hibberd with her take on the indie-pop genre which has piqued the interest of the likes of Six Music and BBC introducing. Her stunning vocals lend themselves perfectly to those all-important guitars and rock beats as her passion and personality are encapsulated in each song, with the likes of ‘Fun Like This’ and ‘Old Head Young Shoulders’. As quoted on her Facebook page, she claims “Don’t tell me stories, I’ll write songs about them!”, and that she does.

Head on down for doors so you don’t miss out on each of these amazing acts. There are limited tickets left so make sure you get yours on Dice now:
